Talkin' With The Team #3 - Josh Thorvaldson

How old are you and who are you sponsored by?

I'm 18 and ride for Sk8 and Vans.

How long have you been on Sk8 Skates?

I've been on Sk8 since grade 10, so three and a half years now.

How did you get on the Sk8 Skates team?

I got invited to some private sesh at the Edge right when the new park opened up. I was told to come down and film some tricks for some sort of promo for the park, because it had only been open for like a month. When I got there the whole Sk8 team was there, and about 10 minutes into skating Colin surprised me with a bag of Sk8 product and told me I was on the team. Then I filmed some shit for a welcome to the team video instead of the Edge promo video like I was expecting

What made you want to ride for Sk8 Skates?

It's funny because I didn't really have a choice. Colin handed me a bag of product and just told me I was on. Don't get me wrong, I was down as fuck. But in all seriousness it's sorta been like a Winnipeg skateboarder childhood dream. Growing up skating and always seeing these dudes at different parks skating together, and every couple years putting on all these premieres, they were always the crew you would look up to because of how involved they were with the scene.

What’s the gnarliest trick to go down in Winnipeg?

Gnarliest trick done in the city is for sure Brock Anderson's switch blunt on the parkade 11. I witnessed it and it was fucked. It's so much more ahead of every trick ever done on that rail. I don't think it even took him more than 10 minutes to do it.

Who would you want to put on the team next?

Not too sure who, maybe Logan Esquash once he skates somewhere outside the plaza. He learns a trick and within a day he does it down the biggest set in the park. I think he learns more tricks in a week than I know in total. I don't think he's even started high school yet, so at this rate he should probably know every trick once he's 16. Logan if you're reading this I'll give you 20 bucks if you nollie heel the U of M 10 stair before it snows.

Favorite Winnipeg skateboarder?

Colin Lambert for sure. He's definitely the hardest working skateboarder I know, and makes a solid effort helping the team with coverage and keeping us all motivated to get out there and do shit.

Best Sk8 Skates memory?

Out of all the skate trips that we've gone on. Probably the camping trip. We camped out about 15 minutes from Kenora and would drive in each morning, skate all day, then head to the campsite right before sundown when all of us could barely walk from being so sore. It's also when I got the nickname Pinner, which was pretty rad. Thanks for that Austin.
